The Manufacturing Time: From Prototype to Final Creation
The making of a garment involves several essential stages: cutting, fitting, and finishing. Then comes the ornamentation, which represents a final step — an additional touch that is considered with great care. Several prototypes are created before the final validation. This process requires time in order to achieve excellence.
Shaping the Garment
After an initial design, usually created on a computer, the pattern maker, equipped with scissors and pins, transforms the designer’s sketch into a three-dimensional garment. A raw cotton toile is placed on a full-body mannequin, allowing the model to be constructed and the different pieces to be developed.
The toile is adjusted, cut, pinned, and draped according to the desired fit and fall envisioned by the designer. Once the garment is assembled, the pattern maker draws the lines that will be used to create the pattern. They determine the placement of seams, neckline, pleats, armholes, pockets, and buttonholes.
Creating the Pattern
The pattern maker then develops the pattern with all the necessary indications for producing the prototype: bust lines, hip lines, seam allowances, and other technical details. The pattern must be clear and logical to facilitate the assembly of the pieces once they are cut from the fabric.
Making Adjustments
Once the prototype is completed, the pattern maker can modify it, adjust it, and refine the shapes. They may also be responsible for writing a technical sheet detailing the characteristics of the garment. This document allows the prototype to be reproduced and serves as the basis for mass production.
Depending on the complexity and the type of garment — whether it is a dress, trousers, or a shirt — this work can take from a few hours to several days.
